Fruit & Vegetable beers - a new way to get your seven serves a day?

Written on 10 September 2009

The Australian Government recommends eating two serves of fruit and five of vegetables a day to stay healthy – does beer count?

Many brewers add fruit or vegetable extracts to their beer to establish a unique flavour and some of them do a pretty good job of it too.

The government would surely be appalled if they found out we included beer in our count of daily fruit and vegetable serves but nonetheless, here are a few of the more interesting ales you could add to your daily tally…

Clipper City Brewing Co., a boutique brewery in Baltimore USA, have created an ale they call ‘The Imperial Pumpkin’ – no guessing what the secret ingredient is.

Magic Hat Brewing Co. from Vermont USA doesn’t give too much away about their beer ‘Number 9’. Although the company likes to keep the ingredients a secret, we know that apricot extract is used to create the flavours they boast about.

In the UK, Wells’ ‘Banana Bread Beer’ is brewed using a traditional ale recipe with the added flavour of bananas creating a truly unique beer.

Finally, Australia’s own Pepperjack Ale is brewed with an added ingredient they pinch from their vineyards – Shiraz grapes.
